  Marta Valdés. 1934


Marta ValdésHavana, Cuba 1934. Songwriter, guitarist and performer. In 1955 she started to write her own works and her earlier song was Palabras. This songwriter has based her creations in genres like the Bolero and song inside Feeling style.

The first song written by Valdés and recorded (by Fernando Alvarez) was No es preciso, in 1957. At that time the famous Cuban singer Vicentico Valdés made famous En la Imaginación, the first one from a great series of boleros Marta would include in his recording repertoires such as Deja que siga sola, Tú dominas, No hagas caso, among others worldwide famous examples.

Many Cuban and South American singers have chosen her works to include in their recordings. She has also taken part in festivals, presenting her own compositions and has also offered concerts in Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil. Marta has also participated in several poetry festivals in many Latin American countries.
She has also composed many works for drama and has published several articles on popular Cuban music.

“Síncopa de Plata” Prize for CD “Elena Burke canta a Marta Valdés”
1978 Grand Prize, Radio and television Prize and UNEAC Prize in the Adolfo Guzmán Music Contest for her work “Canción eterna de la juventud”.
1985 Prize to the best music in the UNEAC National Contest of Theater for the music of the play work “EL becerro de Oro”.
1986 Prize to the best music for a play in the Theater Festival in Camagüey for “La Zapatera Prodigiosa”.
1992 Annual Prize of “Recognition to the Created Work” given by the Music Association of UNEAC.
2001 Cubadisco Grand Prize. “Nuestra canción”, Unicornio Label, Havana.
Government and cultural institutions in Matanzas has conferred the Medal for the Tercentenary of the City.
Distinction for Cuban Culture
Alejo Carpentier Medal.
