Brouwer (Havana City, 1939)
General Director of National Symphonic Orchestra. Since 1981, Master
Leo Brouwer is General Director of the National Philharmonic Institution,
from which National Symphonic Orchestra is its major organization.
Guitarist,
composer, orchestral director, researcher, pedagogue and cultural
promoter. This man, having a global vision and culture, is one of
the most remarkable musicians nowadays. He also plays violonchelo,
clarinet, percussion and piano.
His work in the assessing at national level of radio and television
is outstanding, working also in the direction and organization of
the first music department from ICAIC and Musical Theater of Habana;
in the study program renovation on the disciplines of harmony, counterpoint
and composition of conservatoires; the foundation and direction
of Grupo Experimentación Sonora of ICAIC plus his participation
as jury at diverse national and foreign festivals and the conduction
of more than 80 symphonic and chamber groups over the entire world.
The discography of his music is exceeding two hundred and two registers,
encouraging a labor of almost ten years as Titular Director of the
Orchestra in Cordoba, Spain. He has been also honored with the priviledge
status of Honor Member from prestigious institutions such as UNESCO,
SGAE, the Italo-Latin American Institute and Real Academy Of Fine
Arts in Granada, being also an Illustrious Guest at Sciences and
Arts Academy in Berlin.
Highlighting the most outstanding recognitions,
he has obtained the following prizes: ''La Chitarra con amore''
1997, Milan, Italy; "Manuel de Falla 1998'' in Spain and in
Cuba, Doctor Honoris Causa Title,
Felix Varela Order of first grade
and National Prize of Music 1999.
He was named Adoptive Son of Cordova city and Andalucia being also
UNESCO Prize in 2001. In general he possesses more than a hundred
of distinctions conferred in Cuba and abroad.
