Chinesse
and African roots are entwined the rhythm of this peerless musician as heritage of his
grand parents.
In 1940, being still a child, conformed a musical group named Los
Jóvenes del Son. He was member of important groups devoted
to Cuban popular music highlighting, Maravilla Beltrán, Conjunto
Sorpresa and Chepin Chovén Orchestra where he reached great
popularity in the country. In 1953, entered the Pacho Alonso and Enrique
Bonne`s Groups until 1959 when he travelled to Havana with Pacho Alonso
y sus Bocucos, remaining in this group until 1996.
In 1997, he was
chosen by Cuban musician Juan Marcos González and his North
American colleage and producer Ry Cooder together with a group of
singers to conform Buenavista Social Club, where Ibrahim recorded
12 of the 14 titles contained in this CD.
His popularity,
supported by 60 years of artistic life, has been internationally revered
due to his three nominations and two Grammys, including the 2000 Grammy.
He has also
toured around Spain, Germany, France, Holland, United States and
England. In August of 2002, being acknowledged in adittion with the Distinction for National Culture.
This notable artist died on August 7, 2005 and Cuban music lost one of its best soneros.
