Salvador Bueno Menéndez (1917 - 2006)
 Born on August 18, 1917. Professor and writer. In 1942 he graduated as PhD in Philosophy and Letters. Since then and up to 1947 he worked as Spanish professor in a private teaching institution. Later he worked in the department of Grammar and Literature at High Schools in Pinar del Río and Havana. By means of a contest he was appointed to the department of History of Cuban and Hispano-American Literature in the School of Philosophy and Letters at Havana University. He collaborated with Carteles,Bohemia, Unión, Casa de las Américas, La Gaceta de Cuba, Revista de la Biblioteca Nacional, Cuadernos Americanos( Mexico) and many other foreign and Cuban publishings. He was a tenacious researcher especially of essays from the XIX century, first half of the XX, literary criticism of that period, folklore literature and Cuban narrative in general. He was acknowledged in different regions of the world such as the United States and Europe.
In 1959 he won the Department of Grammar and Literature Award of the National College of Science and of Philosophy and Letters for his essay Trayectoria de Labrador Ruiz (A los 25 años de Laberinto).
He was professor of the School of Arts and Letters of the Havana University since 1962 and Literary Advisor of José Martí National Library; distinguished cultural journalist with many publications in Cuba and abroad.
President of the Cuban Academy of Language from 1995 to 2004. He has won different prizes such as: Alejo Carpentier Medal (1995), National Prize on Cultural Research (2000), Juan Marinello Order (2002) and the National Prize on Social Sciences (2004). He died on October 22, 2006.
