Vidal Ortíz. Las Tunas 1952-2004
Always
from his natal city, Las Tunas, Vidal developed a strong narrative
labor, peaking the top with his La Saga del perseguido,
winner of Alejo Carpentier Prize in 2002.
He also enriched the genre with Las manzanas del Paraíso
(1998) and Los Cuervos (2001), both winners of outstanding
accolades at the international contests Casa de Teatro in Dominican
Republic and Dulce María Loynaz in Cuba. He also wrote El
amo de las tumbas, Los iniciados, Confabulación
de la araña, Matarille and El quinto sol.
The first samples of his narrative talent allow him to obtain the
UNEAC`s 1984 David Prize with his collection of short stories Se
permuta esta casa and the Havana University`s 13 de Marzo Prize
for his stories book Los Iniciados, 1985.
Critics appraised the Vidal`s incisive and rigorous prose, focusing
on the innermost space of human beings, dark and conflicting many
times. Some of his stories are present in the anthology Aire
de Luz published in 1999 by Letras
Cubanas Publishing House.
The Guillermo Vidal`s fruitful work earned him the Distinción
por la Cultura Nacional and it has been published by major publishing
houses such as Letras Cubanas and Oriente in Cuba and Globo in Spain.
The Puerto Rican Plaza Mayor Publishing House auspices a prize under
his name, honoring this notable personality.
