José Fornaris y Luque (Bayamo, 1827-Havana, 1890)
Poet and writer. He composed the romantic song La Bayamesa, patrimony of Cuban culture, together with Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Francisco del Castillo. This theme emerged to aliviate a misunderstanding between lovers and was sung for the first time on March 27, 1851.
Fornaris was considered a founder of the Siboney movement in Cuba, proclaiming a return to indigenous stages, keeping under this message a deep reaction against the Spanish crown. His poem book Cantos de Siboney, not only was the most known but also the opener of such literary stream.
Being lawyer by profession, he founded
El Colibrí y La Piragua publications during a stance in the capital of the city, and edited the anthology Cuba Poética together with Joaquín Lorenzo Luaces.
He is considered as one of the major figures witith the XIX century`s drama. His works tackle such universal topics as love and hate, also the contradictions within the family. In Amor y Sacrificio (Love and Sacrifice) he is tackling the country theme and the situation of this social sector during the colonial stage, this subject was also present in this author`s poetry.
Two years before his death, he gathered his entire poetic production in a material under the name of Poesía (Poetry).
