Fernando
Ortíz Fernández. 1881-1969.
He
was born on July 16, 1881 and died on April 10, 1969 in Havana,
Cuba. He is one of the most remarkable scientific figures in Cuba
and Latin America, as jurist, historian, etnologist, linguist and
sociologist.
His prolific intellectual creation undertakes must-read works, very
useful for the comprenhension of Cuban society, citing: Contrapunteo
cubano del tabaco y el azúcar (Cuban contrapunteo of tobacco
and sugar) (1940); El engaño de las razas (The races deceive)
(1946); Los bailes y el teatro de los negros en el folklore de Cuba
(Dances and theater of the negroes in the Cuban folklore) (1951)and
Historia de una pelea cubana contra los demonios (History of a Cuban
fight against the demons) (1959). In the 50s, he was nominated
to Nobel Prize of Peace.
Among the institutions created by Fernando Ortiz, we can highlight:
Society of Cuban Folklor (1923), Hispanic-Cuban Institution of Culture
(1926) and Society of Afrocuban Studies (1937).
