Eliseo Diego (1920
- 1996).
Poet,
writer and essayist. He was born on July 2 in Havana City, being
very young, he travelled with his family around France and Swiss,
he always considered this experience decisive for his poetic formation.
Before achieving the first decade of life, he wrote his first infant
short stories. He also was one of Origenes Magazine founders together
with Cintio Vitier, Fina García Marruz, Octavio Smith, Agustín
Pi, Julián Orbon, Gastón Baquero, Angel Gaztelu and
Virgilio Piñera among others.
He studied Pedagogy and teached English and North American Literature
in special courses made at Casa de las Americas. He was in charge
of Infant Narrations and Literature Department of José Martí
National Library up to 1970.
Eliseo made translations and versions to the most important figures`
work at Infant Literature in the entire world and was editor of
Union Magazine from National Union of Writers and Artists, receiving
in 1988 and 1989 Prize of Critic. In 1992, University of Valle in
Cali, Colombia, conferred him Honoris Causa Doctorate. In 1993,
he received Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos Distinction conferred by
Asturian Federations of Cuba and the remarkable Juan
Rulfo International Prize of Latin American and Caribbean Literature.
He died in March 1, 1996, while he was in Mexico and his body was
moved to Cuba, where he was buried.
