  Eduardo Heras León


Eduardo Heras León Born in Havana in 1940. Bachelor of Philology and Journalism from Havana University where he worked as professor of Hispano-American Literature, Redaction and Journalism Technique and History of America. He founded the Onelio Jorge Cardoso Literary Workshop in 1988; today it is the Onelio Jorge Cardoso Center of Literary Formation. He practiced literature and dance critic in national publishings like Granma, Juventud Rebelde, Revolución y Cultura, Unión, Casa, Cuba en el Ballet, and some others from Mexico, Spain, etc. He was editor-in-chief of Alma Mater newspaper and Chief of Narrative in Letras Cubanas Publishing House, editor of Letras Cubanas Publishing House, assistant director of Literature of the Cuban Institute of Book (in Spanish ICL), and director of Casa de las Americas Publishing House. Nowadays he works as Director of the Onelio Jorge Cardoso Center of Literary Formation and Vice-president of the Cuban Writers and Artists Union (in Spanish UNEAC)

He has represented Cuba in several international events, book fairs, congresses and international meetings of writers. He has lectured in former URSS (1984), RDA (1986), Argentina (1988-1990), RFA (1988), Spain (1988 and 1996), Brazil (1992), Santiago de Chile (1992), Canada (for many years), Colombia (1994), Venezuela (1994), Italy (1997), Mexico (1991 and 1995), Martinique (1994), United States (1990 and 2001).

He has also carried out seminars and workshops of narrative techniques in: Dominican Republic (1997), Mexico (1998 anb1999), Cuba (1999 and 2001), Uruguay (1987) and in Colombia (1995). The project Universidad para Todos (University for All) comes about his workshop of Narrative, and it was inaugurated on October 2000 with a Workshop of Narrative Techniques on TV.

He has been jury of national and foreign contests like David Contest, UNEAC Contest, Casa de las Americas and New Latin-American Film Festival.

He has won the following prizes: Critic’s Prize, National Prize on Literature, National Prize on Edition 2001, Alejo Carpentier Contest, National Prize of Literature of Colombia, Casa del Teatro Santo Domingo International Prize, Razon de Ser Prize (1987), National Critic’s Prize (1986), National Prize on Chronicle (July 26 th Contest, UPEC, 1990) and Special Prize from the Ministry of Culture in the same contest. Besides that he was granted the Prize for the National Culture in 1990 and the Plate 25 years from the Central University of Colombia.

Some of his stories as co-scriptwriter have been adapted to films such as: Cuestión de principios (an award in the New Latin-American Film Festival in Havana) and La nueva Guerra.
