Vitier. United States, 1921
Poet,
narrator, critic, essayist and anthologist who was born on September
25, 1921. Holding a Doctorate in Law, he carried out a remarkable
teaching labor firstly at Normal School for teachers in Havana,
later on at Las Villas University. Since 1962 to 1977, he developed
a deep research work regarding to literary field at José
Martí National Library.
Cintio is one of the most Cuban distinguished and luminary intellectuals
of the current national literature. Some critics consider his poetry
is bearing high quality and complexity. His first book, Poems
was published in 1938 being prefaced by our outstanding poet
Juan Ramón Jiménez.
Cintio was, together with José Lezama Lima, member of the
famous group Orígenes, holding intellectuals of remarkable
performance at the cultural life of the country around 1944 to 1956.
As one of the most studious of our National Hero José Martí`s
life and work, he was responsible for overseeing the critic edition
of Martí`s Complete Works, being also director of Martí
Studies Center.
Among his significative works, we can highlight Nupcias
(Wedlock) (poetry), Prosa Breve (Brief Prose) (essay)
and Cuentos Soñados (Dreamed Stories). Due to his ample and
important work he was bestowed with National
Prize of Literature in 1988, José
Martí Order, which is the higher recognition conferred
by Cuban State Council and in 2002 Juan Rulfo
Prize of Hispanic American Literature.
