Mendive. Havana City, 1944.
He
was born in Havana City, on December 15, 1944 and graduated from
San Alejandro Fine Arts Academy in 1962. Painter showing great Cubaness
entwined to a strong expression of the African roots, emphasizing
on Yoruba Pantheon. This artist mixes diverse techniques, styles
and colors over different supports and textures.
Canvas, woods, animals and even human skins are useful for him,
giving free reins to the creativity of his dazzling myths and pictorial
narrations.
The
work art of this painter has a singular expression and color, possessing
a permanent link to popular feelings. He has performed more than
40 solo and group exhibitions in Cuba and abroad. His participation
on Sao Paulo, Venecia, Cuenca and Havana Biennials have always awake
great interest due to the particular tone of his creations.
Among the diverse prizes and recognitions
he has received, we can highlight: National Exhibition of Drawings,
Havana, 1965; Collective Prize at Salon of May, Paris, 1967; Third
Prize of Painting at the Exhibition of the National Salon of Cuban
Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC) in 1968; Prize at the II Festival
of International Painting in Cagnes - South - Mer, France, in 1970.
In adittion, the Latin American Space Prize, I Biennial of Havana,
1984 and Prize on the II Biennial of Havana, 1986.
Are
also worthy to mention also, ADAM and Motparnasse Prizes. He was
praised in adittion with Order Gentleman of Arts and Letters from
the French Culture Ministry and in 2001, received National
Prize of Plastic Arts, conferred by a jury with Master at
painting Julio Girona at the head.
