Alberto
Díaz Gutiérrez (Korda)
Self-taught. Creator highlighting within the photography world for his extreme versatility. Photographer evincing the beauty and glamour prevailing around
the 50s in our country. He worked on fashion and advertising before
1959, to become, since the revolutionary triumph, one of the official
photographers of Fidel Castro and the new revolutionary government.
Among the most representative images identifying Korda as a photographer
involved in his social enviroment, can be mentioned: Fidel in front
of Lincoln Monument in Washington (1959); The farola Quijote
(July 26, 1959) ;
Fidel in Sierra Maestra writing at midnight with a poor houselight (1961), Girl having a doll of wood (Pinar del Rio 1959);
the image of Fidel on the pick of a mountain from Sierra Maestra
together with the slogan: Comandante en jefe, Ordene and the most
diffused and famous image of Ernesto Ché Guevara (5/3/60),
it was taken during the burial of victims who died in the explosion of La Coubre Ship`s sabotage (The photo remained unpublished until near Che´s assassination)
His work as photoreporter, captivating almost every important historical moment during the
second half of XX century is placed, mainly, in Posters
Weekly Publication and Revolution Newspaper; his experience
as advertiser became an important contribution for the early production of magazines covers
and newspaper in the spreading of this new process, soaking all these
experiences by a total artistic validity and formal perfection due to
his sensible reception of reality.
Korda´s work was not academically cultivated but strengthen
by the consciuos experimentation in the artistic field. His photography
is characterized by the use of natural light.
Since 1968, he tried on marine photographs. His creations are full of beauty and sensibility, his angles, expressions and environment achieve
the exaltation of sensible elements.
In 1980, he received the First Prize
of Photohistory of the Cuban Magazine Revolution and Culture
and in 1983 he was appraised with the Photograph Prize at the Conquest
Rubén Martínez Villena in Havana City.
