Girona Manzanillo, Granma, 1914
In 1927 he travelled to Havana, where he met important intellectuals
of the epoch, joined to the so-called Grupo Minorista and he is
presented in a conference of the Hispanic-Cuban Culture Institution,
publishing caricatures in social magazines of the epoch. In 1930
he entered San Alejandro, finishing these studies in 1934 at professor
Secre´s workshop; then he published caricatures at the Magazine
Karicato, directed by Ramón Arroyo Cisneros and made a solo
exhibition of direct carving, drawings and modelings at the Architects
School of Havana. He obtained a schoolarship of Education Secretary
to study a year and a half in Europe, that´s why he travelled
to France and Berlin, in this last country he studied sculpture
during three months with Ernesto di Fiore. He returned to France
and entered Ranson Academy, Paris, sponsored by sculptor Arístides
Maillol. He studied sculpture with Charles Alexandre Malfray, his
presence at Ramso Academy was extended until 1937, in that year he travelled
to New York, USA. He worked there eventually at Clay Club Gallery
and some other places as drawer and he made politic caricatures for different
publications from many countries. To acknowledge his excellent work, he was named Honoured
Guest of the American Artists Congress for his remarkable labor
as against-fascism drawer.
In
1939 he returned to Cuba working as politic drawer in the newspaper
Today and he exposed sculptures, watercolors and drawings in the
Lyceum. In 1940 he participated in the Popular Graphic Workshop,
in Mexico, with important Mexican artists, exhibiting with them in
that country and in Cuba with the Cuban engraver and drawer Jorge
Rigol. He also worked with Alfaro Siqueiros in a Mural. He obtained
a schoolarship to study in the United States.
1941 -He made
litographies in Art Students League, in an irregular form.
1943 -Returned to Brooklyn after the war. He abandoned sculpture
and dedicated to painting definitely. He travelled to Havana, participating
in numerous group exhibitions in Cuba, Mexico, Argentine and
United States.
1948 -Exhibition at Havana Lyceum, solo exhibits on oil paintings,
gouaches and drawings having a figurative character.
1950 -He resided in New Jersey. Entered Art League of New York.
He jumpstarted his first abstracts paintings.
1954 - Solo exhibition in Artist's Gallery, New York on February.
He travelled to Havana and exhibited at Havana University.
1956 -He exhibited regularly at Bertha Schaefer Gallery of New York
and other important museums and galleries of EUA and Europe, in
solo with painters of the North American Abstract
Expressionism. Adquisition Prize for his work in the VIII National
Painting and Sculpture Salon, Fine Arts Museum, Havana.
1957 -Participated in important group exhibitions in EUA, among
them, Collage in America, Collage International from Picasso to
the present and American Paintings 1945-1957.
1958 - His oil painting Conflicto was appraised by Adquisition
Prize at the Exposition Work by New Jersey Artists, celebrated in
Newark Museum. He exhibited a solo exhibition at Color-Light
exhibits in Havana.
1959
- Solo Exhibitions at Bertha Schaefer Gallery of New York and in
the Arts Club of Chicago. Exhibitions on Hannover and Kassel, RFA.
1961 - He participated in a group exhibitions as an homage to
the First National Congress of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC),
Fine Arts Museum, Havana, Cuba.
1965 to 67 - He returned to New Jersey and made collages using papers,
cardboard, canvas, woods and some metallic elements which were exhibited
in United States. One of these collages gained Adquisition Prize
in New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, N, J.
1968 - Since this year he travelled to Cuba every year.
1978 to 79 -He teaches drawings at the Superior Institute of Art.
He exhibited a solo exhibition of drawings and oil paintings in
paper at Plaza Culture House, Havana.
1980 - Calligraphies, exhibition of abstract tints and crayons at
Plaza Culture House, from January to May.
1981-83 -He made Testimonies, a serie of figurative works
in tint, oil drawings and abstract paintings. 1983-84 he exhibited
in Cuba, Havana Gallery.
1984 - He participated in I Biennial of Havana with three abstract
oil painting: Telephonic Conversation. Nos, 1, 2 and 3.
1986 - He was invited to participate in the II Biennial of Havana.
He has made exhibitions in Havana, Paris, New York, Frankfurt, Madrid,
England, Caracas and Miami.
