Afro Cuban Deities: Yemayá


Afro Cuban DeitiesShe comes from Obeokuta and is one of the most intelligent and mighty deities. She stands for the stormy and smooth sea. Her main worshippers are the Egbado people whose Queen is Okoto. She is also known by the name of Bosa. Her name, Yemayá Iya-mo-ella, means mother of fish. She was born with the moon.

Her color is blue and it is combined with white.

When she is on the earth, she likes to live by the woods entrance. She is the mother of the salty waters.

Ibu Yabani This Yemayá lives with Brosia.

Ibu Oleyo She is Ibi Okoto`s sister, from the land of Aye Taro.

Ashaba She is the eldest of all the Yemayás. She is the first daughter of Okolun`s, owner of anchors. Her colors are light blue and cocoa. A ship and an anchor hanging finish her crown.

Okute She is a warrior, and Oggun`s assistant. Her real name is Okiente, which means La Brava. Yet, as a result of confusion, they call her Okuto. Her full name is Yemayá Okionte Ogu No Somi. Her crown is made up of seven machetes.

Ibu Seni She lives in small black wells by the river boarders.

Fonda She is the one who died with Inle. She is a warrior and wears a sword..

Odoko She is very strong and is always accompanied by the Orisha Oko; she works the land. Awe Yeni.

Awe Yeni She is blind and lives accompanied by Osojano and Orunla. She doesn’t wear a crown.

Eleda She is the owner of the nostrils. Her crown has snail fringes.

Mayelewo She is Brornu`s favorite daughter. She lives at the sea, she doesn’t look straight, and is a merchant. Following Olofin’s orders, she differentiated the Saints from each other by means of painting. Her name means the one who is interested on money and trade. With the help of Asesu, she painted water blue. She wears a mask.

Ibu Okoto Her name means alive among the shells, she stands for the sea of blood. She presides over the naval battles. Her colors are Prussia blue, snails and water.

Ibu Olowo She is the owner of the money from the sea.

Asesu She is the Queen of ducks, geese, and swans. Her name means absent-minded. Her colors are light blue and soapy water. She is Olokun`s inseparable daughter.

Akere She is mysterious and lives among the dead. Her name means Singing siren. She is the one who makes the Eggun move. Her colors are light blue, jet and water.

Ibu Agana Known as the furious, she came from Orishaoco. She is Otofin`s favorite daughter, and Olokun`s wife. Her colors are Prussia blue, coral and water. Her necklace is blue, red and green. She makes raining possible.

Atamarawa She is important at any moment. She is the owner of the sea treasures. Her colors are light blue, cocoa and coral. She is the forest porter and lives in the depths of the forests.

Ibu Gunie She is the sea sediment, the seashore. Her colors are navy blue and water.

Ibu Akinomi She is the one who makes everyone tremble when she is angry. She lives on the tops of waves. Her necklace has seven Prussia blue beads, seven light blue beads and seven water beads.

Ibu Konia She builds ships and is a scrivener. Her necklace has seven Prussia blue beads and seven cocoa beads.

Yemayá. Ibu Iña This Yemayá has to do with controversies. She is covetous and arrogant. She is Ochosi`s and Inte`s mother. Her necklace has seven Prussia blue beads, seven snails, seven amber beads and seven cocoa beads.
