Continuity of Choral Tradition

Schola Cantorum CoralinaThe recognized Choral institution, Schola Cantorum Coralina, is one of the vocal group of higher professional level in Cuba, that has gone conforming a wide repertoire performing all sorts of styles, since classic even Cuban or from overseas places, religious music and versions to popular themes of all latitudes. Schola Cantorum Coralina has an important discography taking a privileged position "De que cantada manera" and "Canteme" CDs with songs by the peerless Silvio Rodríguez.

The members of this important Choir had as an objective to enlarge their cultural work with the purpose of teaching children to love the music through the song and to educate them in the teamwork. For that reason, began since 1993 the Choral work with children, one of the most significant branches of this remarkable group, which also started with the project Cantorías de Coralina, conducted by Alina Orraca. Also they have carried out a significant task of cultural extension to integrate children between 3 and 15 years of age, which are interested in the infantile interpretations and they are accepted without distinction and without assisting to special vocal and musical qualities.

In these choirs, the children received a melodic, rhythmic and intonation training with the basic conception that if their practiced from early ages it is possible to develop appropriate abilities to sing. Many of these children have been chosen to continue musical studies.

Name as: Solfa, Andantino, Ronda, Arlequin, Colibri, El Principito, Coralillo, Serafin, Roldán, Misol, Mariposa, Estrellita or Fantansía identify this singular and beautiful work that has made possible the creation of the National Movement of children cantatas in Cuba, developing annual festivals under the name of "Cantandole al Sol", where the groups are presented and those of more interpretive quality are chosen.
Cd  Alas del Porvenir

A sample of the development obtained by this movement is “Alas del Porvenir” CD, testimony of the edition 2001 from "Cantandole al Sol" Festival. This CD is composed of 18 finalist themes from this important contest and reflects the freshness and the grace that only the children know how to put to each song that they interpreted. This disk was nominated by Cubadisco 2001 Festival in children music.

In November 2003 was created a Chorus for Children and Youngsters of Schola Cantorum Coralina which members are chosen taking into account their musical qualities and their ages running from 6 to 14 years, among the Cantorías´attendees.

The Children’s Chorus shows a completed work with original pieces from the children’s repertoire. They performed their initial Concert in the Havana Cathedral, with thestory “Mira Marí" by Basque Composer’s David Azurza. The teacher Hector Quintero, National Prize of Theatre in 2003, performed as narrator of this story.

The choir is composed by 40 children till now, conducted by Alina Orraca and as assisting teachers: Sara María Rodríguez, Natacha Vidaurrázaga, Patricia López and Mayelín Pérez and as accompanying pianist: Ariadna Nacianceno.

This children’s choir has participated in important presentations such as “Gala Martiana” celebrated at January 28, 2004, where the choir interpreted Beatriz Corona’s work ”Juguete”, with the National Symphonic Orchestra and the choirs: Schola Cantorum Coralina, Ensemble Vocal Luna, Vocal Leo, Polyphonic Choir of Havana and as soloist participated the singer Kiki Corona.

CD Aire NocturnoDuring 2005, the Choral activity was intense. In March, 2005 the choir participated in the premiere of the 3 rd Symphony by Mahler with the National Symphony Orchestra and Cuban professional choirs. In May, the choir interpreted Beatriz Corona’s works in the Cubadisco Festival to pay tribute to this important composer.
