The Grupo de Experimentación Sonora is memorable, among many
other things, for being an extraordinary workshop where there was
no musical genre omitted. It was running from country music until
Jazz and Bossa Nova, the young members of this milestone group conducted
by Leo
Brouwer, secured their professional evolution with the larger
creativity possible. In this sense, rock was one of the most assisted
contemporary music streams approached by GES with a particular success.
Good example of this is the paradigmatic Cuba va, work composed
by the trilogy Pablo Milanés, Noel
Nicola and Silvio
Rodríguez, where the intense sonority born in a typically
rocky environment allows to expose unavoidable truths about the
reasons we hold as nation to believe in a better future.
Since these early 70's, the entwining between Rock and Nueva
Trova has been suffering permanent renovation, precisely because
the poetic distinguishable among troubadours could be useful for
who is wrapped around the rock's electronic instruments' stressed
expressiveness. This is the case of the popular troubadour Polito
Ibañez's trajectory, who gave a concert at Karl Marx
Theater t support his set Axilas, discographic work via Producciones
Abdala's Unicornio label.
Going far backward to the moment when Recuento CD made its bow,
approaching concerts of 1993, we undoubtly are witnessing the mild
proposal coming from a remarkable group accompanyng him, Pablo
Milanés' group leaded by the keyboardist and arranger
Miguel Núñez. Dealing with this Polito's opera prima
means to enjoy a singer/writer with absolute domain over an urban
poetic with notable lyrism, it's a set holding such classic themes
as the innovating Espejismos and the sutily beautiful Evocaciones,
popular as Dónde estarás?.
However, with a second CD Para
no pensar (2000), Polito definitely assumes rock sonority as
a valid path to express himself. The Britain Rock`s fine tune coming
from such luminaries as Sting and Peter Gabriel is also present
in the set. "Somos números" y "Aromas de jazmín",
highlights as toppers cuts due to the balanced handling of rock
codes as part of a mature creator with talent enough to avoid the
statics` traps and achieve the stylistic diversity of his songs
"Buscando un doble" and"Diagnóstico del siglo",
without resigning such ballads as the one which gives title to this
discographic project.
We are surely agree on the idea that the first song coming to our
minds when listening the name of this singer is Doble Juego, charismatic
set which text is hardly to imagine without the cadencious rock
tune or maybe the Axilas
CD`s opening set. This newly promoted CD shows once again the undoubted
skills of Polito to recreate, along with the veteran Pucho López,
the rock language in its multiple combinations, holding always our
citizenship seal. Moving lyrics entwined to sparkling sounds come
from "Piercing de amor", "Axilas" and specially
"Como mujeres", his current bright spot.
Nevertheless, ''Axilas''`s powerfully-packed track is "Kcho",
inspired in the outstanding Cuban painter where Polito is accompained
by the inusual mixture of the Bárbara
Llanes` soprano voice and Hansel Arocha`s rock guitar.
