Afro Cuban Deities: Changó


Afro Cuban DeitiesOwner of fire, thunder, batá drums and a dancer par excellence. He represents man`s virility. He is erotic and is characterized by being fond of women (mujeriego). He comes from the land of Oyá. Being one of the youngest, he is the king of religion and has a great knowledge about vegetation.

He is warlike, amusing, and at the same time, arrogant He is never defeated in any of his fights. He is clever, understanding and resolved. He was able to travel and get to know many people and cities.

His color is red and it is combined with white.

His atributtes are a hatched and an Oche (similar to a mortar). He invented the partition wall.

He could run away from his enemies in one of the roads and disguise as a woman with the help of Oya.

The woman who gave birth to Shango used to say that when he was a little boy he had a lot of gracefulness and as a result of this he conquered his territory as a grown up.

The king OBBA OSO (Shango`s name) is referred to in the chants as the one who sings and dances the most as well as the most passionate of all in terms of women. He is also the one who says the last word so everyone pays respect to him.
