A tradition of the Cuban culture, since XIX century, is create a group composed by men and women who play an important part as teachers and who make of the classroom a great seat of new spiritual and moral values.
The figure of Medardo Vitier is part of this important group (1886-1960). For that reason he will be honoured in the Day of the Cuban Culture on the occasion of his 120 th birthday. He is coming from an artist and intellectual's family, father of Cintio and grandfathers of Sergio and José Maria. Medardo Vitier highlighted in the history of Cuban Literature as essayist and literary investigator. Author of the study related on the work and the life of the Apostle is published in the Island. His work is awarded by the Lawyers School of Havana. He published in 1911 a political and literary work with the title Martí. From this horizon he gained also a privileged position in the art of the nation.

He is a member of the Cuban Real Academy of Language and also of other Cuban cultural and scientific institutions that have been honoured with his presence. Medardo Vitier offered courses on Spanish Literature in the University of Columbia and in the United States, where his son was born. He imparted classes at educational institutions of Mexico and Puerto Rico, as well as he worked as teacher in the summer courses at the University of Havana and, since 1952, he is professor of History of the Philosophy in the Central University of Villas.

The arts and the culture in Cuba, since XIX century, not only served as way of fantasy, of poetry's register in the creation of the national identity, but also as logical thought that has much value and beauty as well as the thought by images, aspect in which the literary speech of Medardo Vitier highlighted.
