The National Prize of Plastic Arts, is the highest award created by Cuban Culture Ministry and National Council of Plastic Arts to praise the creators' merits in their artwork along their entire life.

Nominees are chosen by Superior Institute of Art, Developing Center of Visual Arts, Fondo Cubano de Bienes Culturales, Wifredo Lam Center, National Fine Arts Museum, Fototeca de Cuba, Ludwing Foundation of Cuba, Arts and Letters Faculty from Havana University, Writers and Artists Union of Cuba and 14 Provincial Centers of Plastic Arts.

Since its beginning, these are the awarded artists of this National Prize:

1994 - Raúl Martínez. Painter and designer.
1995 - Agustín Cárdenas and Rita Longa. Sculptors.
1996 - Raúl Corrales. Photographer.
1997 - Alfredo Sosabravo. Painter and drawer.
1998 - Julio Girona. Painter, engraver and ceramist.
1999 - Antonio Vidal. Painter and drawer.
2000 - Ruperto Jay Matamoros. Painter, drawer and performancer.
2001 - Manuel Mendive. Painter, drawer and performancer.
2002 - Adigio Benítez. Painter and drawer.
