The
internationally famous Cuban restaurant Floridita has always been
an usual customer, who since these moments is always leaning on
the bar, wearing his sandals, always eager about reading, having
his favorite drink, daiquirí.
The sculpture in bronze, located just in the same place he was everyday,
offers the unusual originality of placing a historical personality
in the exact scene of his preference, where the famous North American
writer used to enjoy the exquisite cocktail prepared by the late
barman Constantino Rivalavuelta.
This natural-size statue was created by Cuban artists José
Villa and Rafael Gómez, who were reconstructing the Ernest
Hemingway's image along seven working months, supported by the skills
of another two founders, who molded 250-300 kgs of mineral.
Villa, who is the creator of other sculptures in various places
in the Cuban capital, citing John Lennon`s in Vedado an dthat of
Caballero de Paris in Old Havana, stated it is not precisely a photographic
replica but a reproduction of a man`s image always present in Floridita,
the group of workers of this restaurant always wanted him to be
there in some way.
From
this moment on, the corner which is keeping alive the image of El
Viejo y el Mar and Por quién doblan las campanas`s author
with photos and texts is also boasting his client standing in front
of an open book accompaning a pair of glasses, ready to enjoy his
favorite daiquirí prepared by the current barmen of Floridita
Restaurant.
