Wifredo
Lam Contemporary Art Center is a cultural institution devoted to the
study, research and promotion of the contemporary visual
arts in the developing countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America
and the Caribbean.
It was created in 1983, as an homage to Wifredo
Lam, outstanding Cuban artist of this century, whose artwork review,
in a unique way, the tendency towards universality present at the
Third World from a deep projection of its roots and visual codes.
The Wifredo Lam Center has its headquarters in the building that was
former mansion of Counts of Peñalver in XVIII century, at Empedrado
and San Ignacio Streets, Cathedral Square, Old Havana. This building
has large exhibiting salons, library and video room plus some other
areas.

possesses as patrimony a rich and valuable collection of different
manifestations from the contemporary visual arts allowing the periodical
exhibition in Cuba and other countries, the artwork of prestigious
artists coming from diverse regions.
The Havana
Biennial is one of the most outstanding projects from Wifredo
Lam Center. Along all its editions, beggining on 1984, it has been
becoming in a priviledge meeting place for all those interested in
knowing the best of the contemporary art in asia, Africa, Latin America
and the Caribbean. They have shown thousands of artworks by artists
from all these regions and have gathered lots of critics, museums
and galleries directors, editors of art magazines and collectors from
all over the world to exchange ideas about the artistic international
daily occurrence.
