Beggining
every November and wrapping on the early days of December, Havana
Biennial is one of the most relevant events at Cuban Plastic. Its
2003 edition ended in the celebration of Wifredo
Lam`s Centennial. More than 150 artists coming from Latin America
and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Middle East attended this spectacular
event holding a polemical theoretical agenda, fueling debates on
relevant aspects of artistic contemporary culture.
At the 8th Biennial of Havana, highest event in Cuban Visual Arts
that turns the city into a great gallery, Eslovequian József
R. Juhász as guest artist, was in charge of the opening ceremony
and featured a performance at the attractive Plaza Vieja (Old Square).
Later on, two institutions located near this place -Centro de Desarrollo
de las Artes Visuales (Center of Development of Visual Arts) and
Centro Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam (Wifredo Lam Contemporary
Art Center)- displayed also works on view along the entire Biennial.
Yet another memorable incident was at La California, Centro Habana-based
community developing the Isaroko Project -oblation tree-, where
the existence of a social group is feeding itself to turn into art,
thanks to the interaction with Roberto
Diago, Eduardo Roca (Choco) and Manuel
Mendive.
A little bit far from the city was another important expository
area, La Fortaleza San Carlos de la Cabaña (San Carlos de
la Cabaña Fortress) where works by more than one hundred
artists were displayed. El
Museo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Museum), Havana University`s
Faculty of Arts and Letters, Pabellón Cuba and Biblioteca
Nacional (National Library) were also proper places to reveal good
art around these days.
