Art Deco in Havana

By Miralys Sánchez Pupo.

Casa de las Américas Art Deco`s presence as an architectonical manifestation allowed the appearance in Havana, under the Caribbean sunshine illuminating the capital, of the style created by the French Charles Couybre, emerging after the crisis as consecuence of the first world war during the second decade of last century as a different cultural show.

This singular style gained lots of adepts in different places of the world, for this reason it can be found even in United States`buildings or in cities from the distant Australia. Cuba was not an exception to accept it as part of its urbanism, where it entwines to colonial elements in a perfect coherence before the visitors`eyes.

At the centric Vedado, exactly on 11 and L St, the López Serrano Building arises as a replica of the North American Empire State or Casa de las Américas, having a sober facade and sheltering all those interested in getting deeper into the continental culture in its seat of 3rd Ave and G St.

Another interesting place featunring Art Deco lines is the Casa de la Amistad, located in Paseo between 17 and 19, resuming the love story of Catalina Laza, for whom her lover brought sands from the Egyptian Nilo river and decorated the mansion with Lalique lamps.

Bacardi Building. At the center of the city we can find the America Theater which is typifying this style, while in Playa Municipality, the Arenal cultural complex is improving its typical salons for future meetings with specialists on this architectonical manifestation, present in many of our buildings and capturing the interest of diverse places around the world due to its warm acceptance in this Antillean environment.

Bacardí`s Building is considered a model of Art Deco in Cuba for its amazing beauty and fine restoration; this building is placed near the National Fine Arts Museum.

One of its walls is proudly showing a recognition plaque delivered by the New York association working on the protection of this style which is precisely located at the Empire State from that North American city.
